Our Journal
The Journal of Ubuntu (JoU) is the first journal dedicated to the study of Ubuntu. It was founded in 2023 to provide a platform for the publishing of all aspects and levels of Ubuntu philosophy: family and individual (ukama); community (ujamaa); society (ujamii); environment (imvelo) and spiritual (uroho). Detailed and extensive information about Ubuntu is available on this web page. Ubuntu is defined as:
The worldview of Black people of Africa from where they derive relational, communal, societal, environmental and spiritual knowledges, values and practices .Mugumbate, Mupedziswa, Twikirize, Mthethwa, & Oyinlola (2023)
What happens to the individual happens to the whole group, and whatever happens to the whole group, community or country happens to the individual. People, country, environment and spirituality are intricately related. The individual can only say: ‘I am because we are; and since we are, therefore I am’.Mbiti (1969)
The JoU is published by the Africa Social Work and Development Network (ASWDNet).
